The RANGE Framework for restaurant groups, by Jon Peck, founder of RANGE Hospitality Advisory. Five documents, kept as one file.
The RANGE Framework produces five one-page documents, and each one feeds the next. Kept together, they are the group’s record of one pass through the work.
What each page carries forward
- The Diagnosis names the cause. The Agreement takes that cause as its one problem.
- The Agreement turns the problem into a number, a date and a name. The Short List ranks every fix against that number.
- The Short List keeps two or three fixes. Each one becomes its own Shift System.
- Each Shift System gets a row on The Bench Map: who runs it now, and who is next.
Read in order, the five pages answer one question each: what is wrong, what counts as fixed, what gets worked on first, how it runs every week, and who keeps it running.
Both sides sign every page
Ownership and operations sign each document. One signature is one side’s plan. Two signatures mean both sides read the same page and agreed to it, so the next step works from one version.
One folder, in order
Keep the five pages together, in step order, where ownership and the director of operations can both reach them: a folder on paper or a shared drive, it does not matter which. A document nobody can find in a meeting does no work.
When to read them again
- At the start of each step, read the page before it. Align starts by reading The Diagnosis, not by remembering it.
- When a weekly number moves, find the fix on The Short List it belongs to, then the system that runs it.
- Before every opening, read The Bench Map. The opening is staffed from it.
- When someone named in the file leaves, read every page that names them.
When a page goes stale
A change upstream reopens the pages after it. If the cause on The Diagnosis changes, The Agreement is read again, then The Short List, and so on down the file. A signed page keeps its wording until someone reads the change and signs again. The free templates on this site work the same way. A signed page offers the newer text instead of taking it.
Starting the next opening
When all five documents pass, the next opening of the work starts again at Recognize. The finished file stays as the record of the last one. The new Diagnosis starts by asking whether the old cause came back.
